Call similar to long call of Northern Flicker, but shorter, ending abruptly. Also "wuk" contact call given by perched bird or in flight and consisting of single or irregular series of "wuk" notes "wuk, wuk-wuk-wuk, wuk-wuk". Drumming is short, resonant, beginning with slight stutter, then full drum.
