Common Nighthawk - Chordeiles minor

Photo: jerryoldenettel (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jroldenettel/5834673836/); USA; Adult;
Song: The flight call is a nasal "peent" or "beeerrr", similar to the American Woodcock but higher-pitched and less resonant. Non-vocal booming sound, like strum of an elastic band, produced by air rushing through wings at bottom of steep dive. Threat calls of female at nest like the gurgling growl of a dog.
Sound: Monty Brigham (Nature Sounds of Ontario); 1974 Aug 10; Canada, Ontario; Klondyke Rd, Malakoff; Adult; Primary Sound;
