Red-naped Sapsucker - Sphyrapicus nuchalis

Photo: Linda Pittman; 2010 Jun 1; USA, Montana; Little Rockies; Adult; Male;
Song: It is very difficult to distinguish between Red-breasted, Red-naped and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers by voice or drumming alone. The contact "neeah" call may slightly hoarser and lower pitched than that of the Yellow-bellied. The territorial "quEE-ah" call and "wick-a-wick-a" contact call are very similar between all three species. Drumming occurs in bursts of approximately 5 taps which decrease in speed.
Sound: John Neville (Bird Songs of the Creston Valley, BC); Adult; Primary Sound;
