Courtship call of Virginia Rail similar, but a more shrill, somewhat pig-like "oink---oink---oink--oink--oink-oink-oink" with accelerating tempo like the bouncing of a ball. Also gives an accelerating then slowing series of hard "kek" notes("kek--kek---kek--kek-kek-kek-kek--kek---kek") like the sound of two large, flat stones being clapped together.
